I think different people can deal with different things when it comes to interpersonal relationships. I know myself well, so I know that I can’t deal with opinionated people. It’s one thing to have strong conviction. That’s a beautiful thing. But to think your opinions of me are factual, to think you can tell me who I am and what I experience and how I feel, to value your perspective of me more than my perspective of myself- that’s bullshit. If you’re opinionated to such a degree that you erase the real me so that I fit your opinion of me, we won’t ever get along.

The George Lopez show was on last night and the woman who plays his mom was like “I can’t tell you how many times my life would’ve been easier if I had something dangling between my legs”, aka a clever comment on sexism. And immediately my mom’s fiancé was like “that’s a lie”.

No, it’s just something you’ve never experienced. Women aren’t saying your life is easy because you’re a man, we’re saying that sex as a binary man does not make your life difficult in any way whatsoever. He just displayed the prime reason why women still aren’t respected in this day and age: The men who hurt the cause are the ones who continue to think about themselves when women’s rights having nothing to do with them. If you, as a man, cannot look past your reality living in this world as a male while doing anything pertaining to feminism, you will never understand the full extent of sexism, the reality of women.

For him to blindly say that the day-to-day struggle of women around the world is a lie, based on either a misunderstanding of the phrase, ignorance, or the opinionated stance he’s known to take on any and everything, is harmful. With three words, he’s erased the experiences of women and attempted to silence it. He’s interjected his experiences instead of simply viewing and respecting us in our own right. It’s like some men can’t even look at a woman without thinking of themselves first.

I know that if I talked to my mom about this she’d just say, “everyone’s entitled to their own opinion”. The problem with that is, he treats his opinions as fact. This is why we will never truly bond on a familial level. He actually displayed something in himself that’s very common with people today: he doesn’t know how to have an opinion. He can’t separate his mental disposition (his thoughts) with the reality of the people around him (actual happenings that have occurred, rather than thoughts that have never materialized aside from coming out of his mouth). He never just thinks what he thinks. He has to be right- his world had to be the same as everyone else’s, his truths have to be everyone else’s truths. I couldn’t and wouldn’t ever consider him family. He doesn’t have the capability to understand me or to even see me. All he’ll see is a reflection of himself in me, whether it mirrors him or not. But I don’t care anyway. He’s my mom’s husband. That’s it.

It’s interesting how the things that people offhandedly say reveal so much about who they are.
